Welcome to the life of Dene Botha – surfer, entrepreneur, actor, model, MC, event commentator, TV presenter, sports coach, Guinness World Record holder, party-animal and tireless thrill seeker.
Whether its surfing the perfect points of Morocco, snowboarding in Aspen, paragliding in Spain, dangling from the world’s highest bungee jump here in SA, surf coaching in Norway or attending a trance-parties in Zambia and Portugal he’s always up for an adventure. Give him the microphone and he’s interviewing the country’s best entertainers, or MC’ing events such as ‘Peroni Cafe’, ‘Springtide Beach Festival’, ‘Sports Illustrated Lingerie launch party’ and even heading up the MC’ing at ‘Rocking the Daisies 2011′ as well as Two Door Cinema Club on their recent tour of SA with the 5 Gum Experience.
The son of an international watersports promoter and an award-winning actress, he was surfing at five and acting in professional productions, including Shakespeare, at seven. Bailing school at 15, Dene worked as a waiter and model while running hugely popular parties. Soon earning more than his teachers, he enjoyed several stints in England, Europe and the USA before he turned 20.
Back home in Cape Town he started the Kahuna Surfing Academy, introduced SA’s first formal surf coaching curriculum, became a surf coaches trainer up and down the SA coastline, coached several of SA’s top emerging surf stars and started commentating surfing events including the Billabong Pro at J-Bay, O’neill CWC, Rip Curl Grom Search and many others. In 2007 he started the Earthwave Beach Festival where the GWR for the ‘Most surfers riding the same wave’ was set three times and currently stands at 110 people.
Poise and style was always an element, he signed with ICE Models in 2008 and has been cast as the male lead in dozens of local and international TV ads, including Toyota, Tic-Tac, Tchibo, Danone, Fanta, Beechies and now recently chosen as the international face for Ford Ranger in 2012.
Dene has been invited for modelling seasons in Turkey and Europe and also won numerous awards like the Axe Sweet Life ‘SA’s Most Irresistible Man’ and Mambo Online’s ‘SA’s Sexiest Man’, in the finals of ‘Cosmo’s Sexiest man’ and ‘Cleo Bachelor of the Year’ along with gracing the covers of Men’s Health Living and Bay magazines and featuring in Cosmopolitan, Mens Health, GQ, Cleo, Glamour, Bombsurf, Zigzag and more.
An accomplished social commentator, Dene’s quirky humour and suave approach to topics ranging from extreme sports to local and international travel, fashion, music, entertainment and how to have a good time can now be followed on a regular basis through this website, on his Facebook page and via Twitter @DeneBothaSA.
