R.H.C.P ROCK Cape Town! Die Antwoord: Yeah, not so much
“WOW WOW WOW WOW!” is the general reaction from last night’s Red Hot Chili Peppers concert in Cape Town… Pity about the embarrassment of a band called Die Antwoord. They clearly have no talent, no skill, and are surviving as a musical act because of a one hit wonder on 2009, but hey, stranger things have happened.
At 15h30 on Tuesday 5/03 I sent out a Tweet saying “I LOVE how slow everyone in CT is… “Anyone got RHCP tickets?!” Haha #Epicfail Ps If anyone DOES have, I’m desperately looking“… 25 minutes later I get a Tweet from a rather well connected man back saying “Send me your number, I’ve got tickets for you.” Boom! The stage was set (Haha – Lame) and the excitement was on.
I round up the hottest lady I know, get hold of some mates and let The Shweet Life know that that the JOL is on, and the arrange the rendezvous area. Get to the stadium and the vibe is ELECTRIC. Everyone is on such a high and nothing has even happened yet…. We grab hot dogs and beers (As one does), make our way down the stairs and WE’RE ON. But then, something tragic happens, that band that everyone thought was AWESOME, daring, new-age, and cool (Yes, Die Antwoord), comes on stage… I’m confused. True ‘performers’?
Well, what a load of shit! Their first song (And I’m quoting here), was call ‘Fok jou naaiers’, (which was repeated 250 times), the second was called “Wat Pomp?”, and nothing else really changed throughout their ‘performance’. She sounds like a cat caught under a 16 wheeler truck, and him, well he’s clearly just a very angry man – I’m sorry, we had more fun standing in the queue for the toilets #TrueStory . Talent? Where? Come on man… Moving on.
21h00 comes around, grab another beer or three and NOW the real talent arrives. RHCP step on to stage and the 45 000 strong crowd goes mental! Can’t remember what they started off with but OH YEAH! It was GAME ON! Alternating between their new and old tracks, working the crowd and putting on a show like none other. The sound, lighting, staging, projection screens and everything else was top-class… As expected, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers ROCKED Cape Town to it’s core last night.
We leave 2 hours later still bopping to the tunes and join the masses on the hunt for burgers and silence… WHAT A JOL!
I’m truly grateful to the man behind the comps (Shot Omesh!), Ryan Botha, Tom King, Liam, Luke, Lauren, Benny and Joe, all the mad peeps for making it what it was, and Big Concerts and 5FM for bringing THAT to our shores… Next time, leave the trash behind.
